The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, has apprehended 226 beggars during a statewide enforcement operation.

The exercise, carried out on Thursday, formed part of the state government’s ongoing daily environmental clean-up and enforcement campaign.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the operation was aimed at improving public safety and maintaining environmental standards across Lagos.

According to Wahab, the exercise focused on curbing street begging activities in different parts of the state, which the government said contribute to environmental degradation and public nuisance.

“In continuation of the ongoing daily clean-up and enforcement exercise across the state, a total of 226 beggars were apprehended today,” the commissioner stated.

He explained that officials from both enforcement agencies carried out the operation jointly.

Wahab added that those apprehended would undergo profiling and documentation before being returned to their states of origin.

He reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to sustaining enforcement efforts to promote a cleaner, safer and more organised environment across the state.
