Mukunda Saikia Borbayan to Present 500-Year-Old Satriya Dance at Japan’s World Expo 2025
Renowned Satriya exponent Mukunda Saikia Borbayan is set to represent India at the upcoming World Expo 2025 in Japan, where he will showcase the 500-year-old classical dance form, Satriya Nritya. The World Expo, scheduled to take place in Osaka, will provide a global stage for Borbayan to present this ancient art rooted in the Vaishnavite monasteries of Assam.
Satriya Nritya, introduced by the 15th-century saint Srimanta Sankardev, is one of India’s eight classical dance forms and is known for its devotional themes, intricate movements, and spiritual expressions. Mukunda Saikia Borbayan, a senior monk of the Uttar Kamalabari Satra and a Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, has dedicated his life to preserving and propagating this dance tradition.
His performance at the Expo will not only highlight India’s rich cultural heritage but also foster global awareness of the Satriya tradition. The participation aligns with the Expo’s broader goal of celebrating global diversity through art, culture, and innovation.
