Brazilian football star Neymar has announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 34-year-old forward came off the bench to score Brazil’s only goal from the penalty spot in the closing stages of the match but was unable to prevent the five-time world champions from crashing out of the tournament.

An emotional Neymar broke down in tears after the final whistle before confirming that the match marked the end of his international career.

“It is now over,” he said, describing the defeat as a painful way to end his journey with the Brazilian national team, but adding that the time was right to step away.

Neymar bows out after an outstanding international career spanning more than 16 years. He retires as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, with 80 goals in 130 appearances, surpassing the record previously held by Pelé.

During his time with the national team, Neymar featured in four FIFA World Cups, won Olympic gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and helped Brazil claim the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. He remained one of the country’s most influential footballers for over a decade.

Following the defeat, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti described the loss as heartbreaking, saying the team must now regroup and begin rebuilding for the future.
