The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the introduction of mandatory training programs for all police officers, effective January 2025.
Speaking at the National Summit on Police Accountability in Abuja, Egbetokun outlined the courses, which focus on policing ethics, professional conduct, and officer reorientation. The training will apply to all ranks, from recruit constables to superintendents, as part of efforts to enhance effective policing and accountability.
“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to improving the training and retraining of its personnel to uphold professionalism and public trust,” Egbetokun said.
He also highlighted partnerships with the Society for Peace Studies and Practice to train officers in alternative dispute resolution, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution. Additionally, officers will attend refresher courses and specialized programs sponsored by both local and international partners.
The summit, themed “The External, Internal, and Stakeholder’s Accountability Strategies and Mechanisms of the Nigeria Police Force,” was organized in collaboration with the Cleen Foundation and supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Mr. Peter Maduoma, Acting Executive Director of Cleen Foundation, emphasized that effective policing goes beyond law enforcement to include adherence to integrity, transparency, and human rights standards.
Guest speaker Dr. Etannibi Alemika stressed the importance of an independent police force to strengthen accountability and improve policing outcomes in Nigeria.
