The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Illela Border Command in Sokoto State has rescued two teenage girls from a suspected human trafficking operation while attempting to cross into Algeria through Niger Republic.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the Comptroller of Immigration in charge of the Illela Border Command, Mr. Tony Akuneme, revealed that the victims, identified as Vivian Chigozie and Miracle Felix, aged 18 and 19, were intercepted at the Tureta checkpoint near the Sokoto-Zamfara State border following a tip-off from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
“The young girls, both from Enugu State, were apprehended without travel documents while attempting to cross the Illela border into Niger Republic on their way to Algeria,” Akuneme said.
He confirmed that the victims had been handed over to NAPTIP’s Sokoto State Command for further investigation and support.
Akuneme reiterated the NIS’s commitment to combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling, emphasizing the agency’s collaborative efforts with NAPTIP and other security agencies under the leadership of Comptroller General Kemi Nandap.
