The Nigerian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actress Nkechi Nweje, whose death was confirmed on Friday, March 21, by producer Stanley Ontop.
Stanley, in an emotional tribute, described Nweje as his best friend and revealed that she passed away after a short illness. He admitted struggling to accept the news, stating that he had known about it for hours but found it difficult to believe.
Sharing photos of the late actress on social media, he wrote, “Nollywood in tears as we lost one of our vibrant actresses @nkechi.nweje after a brief illness. Couldn’t post since morning because it felt like a dream. Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha, rest in peace, ma’am. My best friend, she always called to advise me. The last time we spoke was during Queeneth’s saga. She told me, ‘Ontop, stop.’ I am still speechless.”
Following the announcement, Nollywood actors and fans flooded social media with tributes and expressions of disbelief.
Actress Destiny Etiko reacted, “How is this possible? Please be sure, @stanley_ontop.”
Chizzy Alichi wrote, “Mbanu, how??????”
Other industry colleagues and fans also expressed their shock, with many describing Nweje as a kind and loving person.
