Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmad, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has advised corps members to view their service year as an opportunity for growth and impact, urging them to embrace their host communities and adapt to new environments.
Speaking at the NYSC temporary orientation camp in Kaduna on Friday, Ahmad addressed the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream I corps members undergoing the three-week orientation program. He encouraged them to remain open to change, stressing that life extends beyond their immediate communities.
“Find a sense of belonging wherever you are posted. Embracing new experiences and environments is essential for your personal growth and development,” Ahmad said.
He urged corps members to contribute positively to their host communities, respect local cultures and traditions, and stay peaceful and resilient. “Many of you may choose to remain in your host communities after your service year because of the value you add here,” he noted.
Highlighting the importance of security, Ahmad advised the corps members to remain vigilant. “Your security is our priority, but no one can secure you better than yourself,” he added.
The director-general also emphasized the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, encouraging corps members to leverage it to become self-reliant and entrepreneurial.
“The Federal Government is committed to empowering youths to stand on their own. Many of your predecessors who maximized this opportunity are now independent and thriving,” Ahmad stated.
He cautioned corps members against unauthorized and night travels, indecent dressing, and other behaviors that could tarnish the NYSC’s image, urging them to focus on making their service year productive and impactful.
