More than 2,000 athletes are set to compete in the third season of the MTN Champs, a major track and field event kicking off in Benin on Thursday.

Bambo Akani, Founder and CEO of Making of Champions (MOC), announced this at a press briefing on Wednesday, highlighting the competition’s role in discovering and nurturing young talent.

Akani noted that Season 1 of the MTN Champs, first held in Benin, unearthed promising athletes, some of whom have secured full athletic scholarships in the United States. He expressed confidence that the latest edition would produce more stars capable of representing Nigeria on the global stage.

Osaze Ebueku, MTN’s Senior Manager of Sponsorship and Go-To-Market (GTM), reaffirmed the telecom giant’s commitment to talent development, likening the young athletes to raw diamonds being refined into world champions.

The Chairman of the Edo Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, reiterated the state government’s support for grassroots sports, noting that Governor Monday Okpebholo had approved the use of Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and provided additional logistics to ensure a smooth and successful event.
