Bushra Bibi, wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, was released from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Thursday after being granted bail by the Islamabad High Court a day earlier, according to Khan’s lawyer, Naeem Haider Panjutha.
The couple was sentenced in January to 14 years in prison for illegally retaining and selling state gifts during Khan’s tenure as prime minister (2018-2022).
A court ruled that they had sold gifts worth over 140 million rupees ($505,000) from the state treasury, known as Toshakhana.
Both Bibi and Khan deny the charges, calling them politically motivated to target the former cricket star, who has faced numerous legal battles since his ousting as prime minister in 2022. Khan claims the military backs the current government led by Shehbaz Sharif, but Sharif’s administration denies interference in judicial matters.
The case is part of a broader political crisis in Pakistan, where Khan remains popular, with his party winning the most seats in the February 2024 general election. Khan has faced over 150 legal cases since 2022, including incitement to violence and corruption charges.
