Police Arrest Hacker for Breaching National Security, Leaking Sensitive Documents

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has arrested an individual involved in a criminal conspiracy linked to breaching national security. The suspect faces charges under the Official Secrets Act for leaking classified documents, engaging in fraud, and evading taxes, among other serious offenses.

Speaking to the press at the Force Headquarters on Tuesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that the arrest is part of efforts to safeguard national security and maintain public order. The investigation was prompted by a complaint from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), which revealed that a restricted document on a sensitive matter had been leaked by an anonymous blogger on Twitter.

Following a detailed investigation, three individuals, including the principal suspect Bristol Isaac Tamunobifiri, were identified. Tamunobifiri was arrested at a hotel in Port Harcourt, where he attempted to destroy evidence by smashing and flushing his phone. He refused to cooperate with authorities, concealing critical information.

Further investigations uncovered suspicious activities between the suspect and his accomplices. Tamunobifiri is also accused of leaking documents from the offices of the President and the Inspector-General of Police, jeopardizing the country’s security. Forensic analysis revealed the suspect had also raised funds to support cyberterrorism.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun reiterated the Force’s commitment to national security and assured that all those involved in this conspiracy will be brought to justice. The suspect has been charged and is currently in custody as further investigations continue.
