Pope Francis has announced the appointment of 21 new Cardinals from various regions around the world, with the Consistory scheduled for December 8, 2024, at the Vatican.

This announcement followed his Sunday Angelus prayer, highlighting the significance of this global representation within the Catholic Church.

The newly appointed Cardinals come from nations such as Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Japan, the Philippines, Serbia, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Canada, and Australia.

The diverse origins of these new leaders reflect the international scope and inclusivity of the Church.

“Their origins express the universality of the Church, which continues to proclaim God’s merciful love to all people on earth,” Pope Francis said.

He called for prayers for the new Cardinals as they strengthen their commitment to Christ and support his ministry.

This Consistory will raise the number of Cardinals to 256, with 141 eligible to vote in the next Papal conclave.

The event coincides with preparations for the 2025 Jubilee of Hope and the closing of the Second Session of the Synod on Synodality.

The announcement of these Cardinals, set to take place on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, underscores the ongoing evolution and leadership within the global Catholic community.
