Pope Francis Prays for Trump’s Leadership, Calls for a Just and Inclusive America

Pope Francis has extended well-wishes to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in a traditional message sent ahead of his presidential inauguration in Washington.

Despite his prior criticism of Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric, the pontiff conveyed prayers for wisdom and strength as Trump prepares to assume office. “I hope that under your leadership the American people will prosper and always strive to build a more just society, where there is no room for hatred, discrimination or exclusion,” Pope Francis said.

The pope’s message follows years of pointed critiques of Trump’s policies, including sharp opposition to his stance on immigration. On Sunday, Francis condemned Trump’s reported plan to intensify immigration enforcement across the U.S., labeling it a “disgrace.” In an Italian television interview, he criticized the policy, saying it would “make the migrants, who have nothing, pay the unpaid bill.”

Trump’s team has since hinted at revisiting immigration plans, particularly after reports emerged about potential raids in Chicago.

The pontiff’s disagreements with Trump date back to the 2016 election campaign when he declared Trump’s views on immigration to be “not Christian.” However, his latest message underscores hope for unity and prosperity under the new administration.
