Spirit Airlines has ceased operations after 34 years in business, marking the end of one of the most recognisable ultra-low-cost carriers in the aviation industry.

The airline announced it has begun an “orderly wind-down” of its operations with immediate effect, bringing all flights to a halt. It also confirmed that its customer service channels are no longer active.

Known for its bright yellow aircraft and budget-friendly fares, Spirit Airlines operated hundreds of daily flights and employed approximately 17,000 staff at its peak. The carrier built its reputation on a no-frills model that reshaped the low-cost travel segment and pushed competitors to rethink pricing strategies.

In a statement, the airline expressed pride in its impact on the industry, noting that its ultra-low-cost model helped make air travel more accessible to millions of passengers.

The shutdown leaves thousands of travellers affected and signals a significant shift in the budget aviation market, where rising costs and intense competition have increasingly challenged low-cost operators.
