Steve Guttenberg Files for Divorce from Emily Smith After Six Years of Marriage
Actor Steve Guttenber has filed for divorce from his wife, Emily Smith, marking the end of their six-year marriage.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the Police Academy star, 66, submitted the divorce papers on Friday, April 4, at the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County. He cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split, but did not specify the exact date of separation—listing it instead as “TBD” (to be determined).
The couple, who tied the knot in a private Malibu ceremony in January 2019, had a prenuptial agreement in place. The document outlines how any community property, assets, and debts will be divided. Guttenberg also agreed to pay spousal support and requested that both parties handle their own legal fees moving forward.
Guttenberg and Smith, a television news anchor, first met in 2014 on a blind date arranged by WCBS-TV’s Scott Rapoport. They got engaged in December 2016 and do not have any children together.
This marks the actor’s second divorce—he was previously married to model Denise Bixler from 1988 to 1992.
The divorce news comes shortly after Guttenberg was seen actively supporting his neighbors during the Palisades wildfire. Despite his own home narrowly escaping damage, he joined recovery efforts, helping clear brush, battle flare-ups, and share resources like food, heaters, and water with other affected residents.
“I choose to stand and fight. And help,” he told People, reflecting his commitment to supporting the community through the crisis.
