Thousands Rally in Bangkok Demanding Thai PM Resign Over Border Dispute

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Bangkok on Saturday, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra over the government’s handling of a simmering border dispute with Cambodia.

The demonstration, one of the largest since Shinawatra took office, saw citizens waving national flags and chanting for the prime minister to step down, accusing her administration of compromising Thailand’s territorial integrity.

The dispute centers on a contested area near the historic Preah Vihear temple, where tensions have recently flared following reports of unauthorized Cambodian construction and military activity.

“We will not allow any government to give away Thai land,” a protest leader told the crowd. “Paetongtarn has failed to protect our sovereignty and must resign immediately.”

Opposition parties have echoed public anger, accusing the government of lacking transparency and being too passive in responding to Cambodian actions near the disputed border zone.

In response, the Prime Minister’s Office said it was working through diplomatic channels to resolve the issue peacefully and protect national interests. “We are committed to safeguarding Thailand’s territorial claims through legal and peaceful means,” the statement read.

Despite the government’s reassurances, protest organizers say they will continue to rally until Shinawatra resigns or takes stronger action to defend the disputed territory.

The border row has added to mounting political pressure on the prime minister, already facing criticism over economic challenges and calls for democratic reforms.
