Three men have died after being electrocuted by high-voltage power lines while working on a construction project in the Fegge area of Onitsha, Anambra State.

The victims reportedly came into contact with live electrical infrastructure while carrying out construction work in the area.

Local emergency responders and electricity officials were said to have arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. However, all three men were confirmed dead.

Reacting to the tragedy, FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company expressed sadness over the incident and renewed its warning to property owners, construction workers and residents against carrying out activities dangerously close to live electricity lines.

The company’s Head of Communications, Izunna Okafor, described the incident as a reminder of the dangers associated with construction and installation work near overhead power lines without adequate safety precautions.

Okafor explained that metal objects could conduct electricity when they come into contact with energised power lines, potentially causing fatal electrocution even when the individuals handling them do not directly touch the wires.

He said the company would continue to intensify electricity safety awareness campaigns in markets, motor parks, streets, schools and communities across Anambra State to discourage dangerous activities around power infrastructure.

The electricity distribution company also warned against unauthorised buildings, trading stalls, canopies, scaffolding, water tanks and the handling of long metal objects within electricity line corridors.

It urged residents to report hazardous activities and encroachment on power line corridors to the relevant authorities to prevent further loss of lives.

The incident highlights the need for strict compliance with electrical safety regulations, particularly during construction and other activities near high-voltage power lines.
