President Bola Tinubu has commissioned the completed Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way), a major transportation corridor linking Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in Abuja’s Dape District, commending Julius Berger Nigeria Plc for delivering the project with speed, quality and professionalism.

The President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, described Julius Berger as a world-class engineering company known for executing projects with precision and excellence.

Despite heavy rainfall, Shettima inaugurated the road and praised the contractor for its high standards of workmanship and commitment to timely project delivery.

Tinubu noted that the project reflects his administration’s determination to end the era of abandoned infrastructure projects. According to him, the road was conceived, funded and completed within a strict 15-month timeline after the contract was awarded in October 2024.

He emphasized that infrastructure development remains a critical indicator of national progress, stressing that a modern capital city cannot thrive amid neglected projects, poor connectivity and unfulfilled promises. The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) into a functional and world-class capital.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike also applauded Julius Berger for its performance, describing the company as a contractor that approaches every assignment with seriousness and professionalism.

According to Wike, the successful completion of the project demonstrates what can be achieved when strong political will is backed by disciplined execution. He added that the current administration prioritizes results-driven governance, ensuring that projects receive the necessary funding for timely completion.

The minister disclosed that the road inauguration is part of a 31-day programme of project commissioning across the FCT, aimed at showcasing ongoing infrastructure development in the nation’s capital.

Providing technical details of the project, Julius Berger Managing Director, Engr. Dr. Peer Lubasch, said the road construction involved extensive engineering works, including a dual carriageway, a two-span river bridge, large-scale earthworks, rock excavation, drainage infrastructure, box culverts, street lighting and utility corridors.

Lubasch explained that a significant portion of the project’s complexity lies beneath the surface, particularly in the drainage and utility systems designed to ensure the road’s long-term durability and efficiency.

He described the road as more than just a transportation route, noting that it serves as a strategic infrastructure link that enhances mobility and connectivity across rapidly developing districts of Abuja.

According to him, the completed corridor has eased traffic congestion around Life Camp Junction and improved access to communities such as Dape, Gwarinpa, Kado, Karsana, Idu, Gwagwa and Jiwa, while strengthening links to the city centre and the airport corridor.

Lubasch further described the project as a testament to visionary leadership, engineering excellence and effective collaboration, commending the FCT Administration for accelerating infrastructure development across Abuja.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior government officials, members of the National Assembly and other dignitaries, who hailed the project as a significant milestone in the expansion and modernization of Abuja’s road network.
