U.S. TikTok Ban Delayed Again as China Stalls on Tariff Deal

The United States has once again postponed its decision on banning TikTok, following delays in trade negotiations with China over tariffs, Sky News reports.

The Biden administration had been expected to act on legislation that could lead to a nationwide ban of the popular video-sharing app unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, divests its U.S. operations. However, sources close to the discussions said the move has been pushed back due to ongoing talks between Washington and Beijing regarding wider trade issues, including tariff reductions.

U.S. officials reportedly hope to use the TikTok situation as leverage in securing a more favorable outcome in the tariff discussions, which have remained unresolved for months.

The delay marks the latest twist in the prolonged effort by American lawmakers to address national security concerns surrounding TikTok. Washington has long warned that the app could be used by the Chinese government to access sensitive data on U.S. users — an allegation TikTok has repeatedly denied.

Despite bipartisan support for action against TikTok in Congress, the White House appears to be treading carefully as it balances tech regulation with complex trade negotiations.

Meanwhile, China has shown little willingness to approve any forced sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations, viewing it as a strategic asset and a key player in its global tech ambitions.
