Ukraine on Sunday commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, as concerns persist that the ongoing war with Russia could heighten nuclear risks in the region.

Memorial events were held to honour firefighters and workers who died in the aftermath of the 1986 catastrophe, widely regarded as the world’s worst nuclear disaster. At a night ceremony in Slavutych, plant staff lit candles in remembrance of those who lost their lives.

Ukrainian officials have warned that continued military activity near the site poses a potential threat. Kyiv says Moscow has repeatedly launched missiles and drones along flight paths close to the nuclear plant while targeting Ukrainian cities.

Authorities also reported that a protective shield at the facility was damaged during an ആക്രമ last year, raising fresh concerns about the safety of the site amid ongoing hostilities.

The anniversary comes as Ukraine remains on edge over the possibility that the conflict could trigger another nuclear emergency, underscoring the lasting legacy of Chernobyl and the heightened risks posed by war around sensitive infrastructure.
