The United States has recorded more than 1,000 measles cases for the first time in five years, according to new data released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A total of 1,001 confirmed cases have been reported across 30 states, including California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois. This marks the highest national count since 2019, when the CDC documented 1,274 cases over the full year.

The CDC reports that 13% of this year’s measles patients have required hospitalization, with most hospitalized individuals being under the age of 19.

Alarmingly, 96% of those infected were either unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status. Only 4% of confirmed cases involved individuals who had received one or two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Health officials continue to stress the importance of full vaccination, especially amid ongoing outbreaks in multiple states.
