European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, pledging new military and energy initiatives as the country marks three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Speaking ahead of a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev on Monday, von der Leyen emphasized the global significance of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

“A free and sovereign Ukraine is in the interest of the entire world,” she stated.

With Ukraine’s 2025 budget now secured, she underscored the need to accelerate military aid.

“We must speed up the immediate delivery of weapons and ammunition,” she said, announcing plans to present a comprehensive strategy to boost EU arms production and defense capabilities, which Ukraine will also benefit from.

In addition to military support, von der Leyen highlighted efforts to enhance Ukraine’s energy security. She revealed plans to fully integrate Ukraine and Moldova’s electricity markets into the EU’s power grid by the end of next year.

“Our close partnership is in the Ukrainian interest, but also in the European interest,” she noted.

Von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa are set to visit Kiev on Monday in a strong display of EU solidarity with Ukraine on the war’s third anniversary.
