Pope Francis “rested well” overnight but remains in critical condition, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday, as the 88-year-old pontiff continues his hospitalization in Rome.
Despite a slight improvement, the Holy See stated that the pope remains under close medical supervision at Gemelli Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for double pneumonia since mid-December. His condition worsened over the weekend following an acute breathing crisis that required oxygen support, and he has since developed mild kidney insufficiency.
In response, thousands of Catholics worldwide have been holding nightly rosary prayers for his recovery. On Monday, over two dozen cardinals, led by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, gathered in St. Peter’s Square for a special prayer service.
“For 2,000 years, the Christian people have prayed for the pope when he was in danger or sick,” Parolin said during the gathering.
Ahead of the prayer, Pope Francis expressed his gratitude in a written message, thanking the faithful for their support.
The Argentine-born pontiff, who has led the Catholic Church since 2013, is the second-oldest pope in history.
