Army Steps In as Rat Infestation Grows Amid Birmingham Bin Strike

The British Army has been called in to support Birmingham City Council as weeks of ongoing bin strikes have left over 17,000 tonnes of uncollected waste piling up across the city, triggering a growing rat and pest problem.

The strike action by members of Unite came in response to the council’s plans to cut bin collection and recycling roles, prompting the declaration of a major incident due to the mounting public health risks.

While soldiers will not be directly clearing the rubbish, they will provide behind-the-scenes logistical and operational planning support, according to a report by MailOnline.

“The government has already deployed staff to help with logistics and to ensure swift action on the ground,” a government spokesperson said. “Due to the continuing public health concerns, a small number of military personnel with planning expertise are now supporting Birmingham City Council.”

Residents have expressed frustration over the situation, with some choosing to stop putting out their bins entirely. “I won’t be putting out any of my bins until they’re all emptied,” said Michael Hunt, a resident of central Birmingham. “If they stay here much longer, the smell will become unbearable, and people will just dump rubbish beside the bins.”

Pest control companies have also reported a sharp rise in callouts. William Timms, owner of WJ Pest Solutions, said service requests have increased by 75%, warning that “the problem is only going to get worse.”

The strike is expected to continue into the summer if no resolution is reached, leaving residents to deal with the consequences of a deepening waste and pest crisis.
