Authorities in Novo Lino, northeast Brazil, have launched a murder investigation after a 15-day-old baby girl was found dead inside a cabinet at her family home. The infant, Ana de Oliveira, was discovered wrapped in a plastic bag and hidden in a wooden cabinet in the laundry area after her mother confessed to killing her.

Eduarda de Oliveira, 22, had initially reported Ana missing, prompting a widespread search by police across the city on Friday, April 11. She told investigators that her baby had been abducted by four men in a black vehicle while she waited at a bus stop with her older son. Over the following days, she gave conflicting accounts, including claims of being forced at gunpoint by a woman, threatened by knife-wielding assailants, and being attacked in her home by two hooded intruders.

However, none of her versions held up under police scrutiny, with surveillance footage disproving her claims. After several inconsistent statements, Eduarda eventually revealed Ana’s location to family members on Tuesday, April 15.

Eduarda first claimed Ana had accidentally choked during breastfeeding, but later admitted she suffocated the baby after being deprived of sleep by her cries and noise from a nearby bar.

Police arrested Eduarda for concealing a body but have not yet charged her with murder. Investigators are also looking into the possibility that someone else may have assisted in hiding the baby’s body.

“The mother may have become desperate and asked a family member for help,” said Alagoas Civil Police chief Igor Diego. “These are areas the investigation is still working on.”

Authorities continue to gather evidence as the community mourns the tragic loss of baby Ana.
