Man Indicted Over UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Fatal Shooting
Luigi Mangione, 26, has been indicted on multiple federal charges in connection with the December 2024 shooting death of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the largest private health insurer in the U.S.
Thompson was fatally shot in the back on December 4 while walking to a conference in Manhattan, New York. Authorities say Mangione used a firearm equipped with a silencer and deliberately targeted the healthcare executive.
The federal indictment includes charges of murder through the use of a firearm, use of a silencer in a violent crime, and two counts of stalking. Following a nationwide manhunt, Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania on December 9.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that prosecutors will seek the death penalty, stating, “I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”
However, Mangione’s defense team has criticized the move, claiming the decision to pursue capital punishment is politically motivated.
In addition to the federal charges, Mangione faces state-level prosecution in New York. He has been charged with first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, two counts of second-degree murder, weapons violations, and using a forged document. He has pleaded not guilty to the state charges.
The case has drawn national attention due to the high-profile nature of the victim and the severity of the charges. Investigations are ongoing.
