The Nigerian Army has launched a renewed counter-insurgency operation aimed at flushing out bandits and criminal elements from the Kainji Lake National Park and adjoining border communities in Kwara and Niger states.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General Obinna Onubogu, disclosed this during an interview with newsmen in Kaiama, Kwara State.
According to him, the operation follows a directive from the Chief of Army Staff, with troops now actively combing the dense forest area to dislodge criminal elements and restore security.
“The troops acting on the instruction of the Chief of Army Staff have stormed the forest to dislodge the bandits and other criminal elements,” Maj.-Gen Onubogu stated.
He further assured that the operation would be sustained with intensity, emphasizing the commitment of the officers and men involved in the mission.
“The men and officers deployed for the operation are not resting on their oars to restore sanity and public confidence,” he said.
Maj.-Gen Onubogu also noted that the military is working in synergy with other security agencies and local communities to reinforce the safety of the park and surrounding areas.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the operation, code-named “Park Strike Four,” is expected to cover a distance of at least 90 kilometers from Kemanji into the Kainji forest, targeting known criminal hideouts.
