Philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, has reaffirmed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s long-standing commitment to Africa, highlighting a new $200 billion push toward health innovation and AI-driven development on the continent.

Speaking at the Nelson Mandela Hall during his recent visit, Gates underscored the foundation’s strategy of direct engagement and partnership with African governments and innovators. His visit, part of a broader effort to assess the evolving dynamics of foreign aid and African development, reinforces a hands-on approach that values collaboration over charity.

“These visits are not just ceremonial,” Gates said. “They are a way to understand what’s working, what’s changing, and how we can best support Africa’s own priorities.”

With a legacy of over two decades on the continent, the Gates Foundation has played a pivotal role in advancing healthcare, agricultural development, and education. Gates reaffirmed that the foundation’s focus will deepen further in the years ahead.

“Our foundation has an increasing commitment to Africa,” he said. “We’ve been here for over 20 years, and we will continue to work side by side with you to build a healthier and more prosperous future.”

His remarks called on African leaders, scientists, and global partners to embrace this moment as a turning point. The promise of new investment—backed by emerging technologies like artificial intelligence—is aimed at accelerating solutions tailored to local needs.

The $200 billion initiative, coupled with a renewed spirit of partnership, sets the tone for what Gates describes as “a new era of collaboration and transformation” across Africa.
