NDLEA Proposes Mandatory Drug Tests for Newly Admitted University Students
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced plans to implement mandatory drug tests for all newly admitted university students as part of the admission process. This proposal, aimed at curbing drug abuse among youths, was disclosed by the NDLEA commandant in Kwara State, Fatima Abiola-Popoola, during a radio program in Ilorin over the weekend.
According to Abiola-Popoola, the mandatory drug tests would serve as a preventive measure, allowing for early intervention and counseling for students who may already be using drugs. “This initiative is crucial for preventing young people from becoming problematic drug users,” she explained.
The NDLEA official also raised concerns over the increasing number of drug users in Nigeria, particularly among women, noting that this trend poses significant risks to families and society as a whole.
Citing a 2018 survey, Abiola-Popoola revealed that 14.3 million Nigerians were using drugs, with one out of every seven individuals being a drug user. Alarmingly, one out of every four drug users in the country is a woman. “This data is troubling, especially considering the critical role women play in managing the home,” she added.
