Dutch Cabinet Ministers Hand Over Phones Amid Espionage Concerns

In a move to mitigate espionage risks, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof has implemented a new rule requiring all ministers to surrender their mobile phones before Cabinet meetings.

The ban extends to all electronic devices with microphones, including smartphones and tablets, as a precautionary measure.

Schoof, who previously headed the Dutch secret service, described the rule as “completely natural” and necessary to ensure secure discussions.

Despite the lack of evidence that foreign intelligence agencies have tapped ministers’ phones, Interior Minister Judith Uiter mark confirmed that the prime minister is taking proactive steps to safeguard sensitive information.

As part of the new protocol, ministers are now required to take notes on paper, a return to traditional methods.

However, Prime Minister Schoof has allowed regular phone breaks during meetings for essential communications. The new rules took effect after Schoof assumed office in July.
