U.S. Pushes for Stronger Trade, Investment Ties with Nigeria at 250th Independence Anniversary

The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening economic ties with Nigeria, signalling a shift towards deeper trade and investment engagement with Africa’s largest economy.

Speaking on Thursday night in Abuja during a reception marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, Keith Heffern, said future relations between both countries would be driven by commerce, technology, investment and shared prosperity rather than traditional aid frameworks.

Heffern said the United States views Nigeria as a strategic economic partner positioned at the centre of Africa’s emerging growth story.

According to him, Africa’s projected population of 2.5 billion by 2050 and a consumer market estimated at more than $16 trillion present significant opportunities, with Nigeria expected to play a leading role in that transformation.

“We see that potential clearly, and we are here to help unlock it – together,” he said.

He explained that through commercial diplomacy, targeted investments in key sectors and transparent engagement, both countries are creating the foundation for sustainable growth, resilient supply chains and expanded economic opportunities.

Heffern added that the U.S. hopes to combine Nigerian innovation with American expertise to drive industrial growth and create jobs.

Beyond economic relations, the envoy highlighted the longstanding security cooperation between both nations, particularly in counterterrorism efforts across Nigeria’s North-east and the Lake Chad Basin.

He said joint operations and strategic collaboration have contributed to protecting communities and saving lives.

“Our security partnership in the fight against terrorism has saved lives, protected communities, and demonstrated what is possible when two nations stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of their people,” he said, describing the relationship as a source of pride that would continue.

Reflecting on the significance of the anniversary celebration, branded “Freedom 250”, Heffern said the occasion goes beyond commemorating America’s independence and represents enduring democratic values.

He noted that those principles resonate with Nigeria, which he described as Africa’s largest democracy and one of the continent’s most dynamic nations.

The envoy also emphasised that U.S.-Nigeria relations extend beyond government-to-government engagement, citing the contributions of entrepreneurs, students, creatives and business leaders in strengthening ties between both countries.

“As we mark 250 years of American independence, we look forward with hope, confidence and deep gratitude for the friendship of the Nigerian people,” he said.

The United States and Nigeria have maintained diplomatic relations since Nigeria gained independence in 1960, with cooperation spanning security, health, education, trade and governance. In recent years, both countries have increasingly focused on private-sector-led growth and investment as the foundation of future bilateral engagement.
