20 Kidnapped Medical Students Rescued in Benue State

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of 20 medical students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, who were abducted by gunmen on August 15.

The students, en route to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) Convention, were kidnapped in Otukpo, along with a House Officer accompanying them.

Police spokesperson Sewuese Anene announced their release to reporters late Friday night, stating, “The victims have been released. More details will be provided on Saturday morning.” However, further specifics on the rescue operation were not disclosed.

The students’ release comes five days after Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun deployed a tactical squad to Benue and directed the state’s Commissioner of Police to relocate to Otukpo to oversee the rescue mission.

The successful operation was coordinated by a joint security team under the Office of the National Security Adviser.
