The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has commended the discipline and competitive spirit displayed by players at the ongoing Chief of Defence Staff Unity Basketball Championship in Lagos.

Gen. Musa, who attended the games at the National Stadium Indoor Sports Hall alongside the Special Guest of Honour, Maj.-Gen. Henry Tafida, Commander of the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps, praised the participants for their effort, dedication, and determination, describing them as qualities Nigerian youths bring into every pursuit they commit to.

He noted that youths, who constitute Nigeria’s largest demographic, continue to shape the nation’s progress through their energy, creativity, and global achievements, particularly in sports.

Also speaking, Maj.-Gen. Tafida said the CDS places high value on sports initiatives, adding that the championship would attract wider youth participation in its second edition. He linked the effort to Musa’s vision of involving all sectors of society in nation-building, stressing that the competition would help channel youth energy positively.

Similarly, Maj.-Gen. Martins Obiora Enendu (rtd.), former Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC), described the event as a laudable innovation that instils discipline and teamwork in young people.

He emphasised that sports provide constructive engagement for youth and help instil virtues needed to strengthen society and build national development.

The championship, which kicked off on September 30, features 12 teams from South-West states alongside guest teams from Edo and Delta. It will end on October 5, with the overall winners receiving ₦2 million, while the first and second runners-up will take home ₦1.5 million and ₦1 million, respectively.
