Militant Attack on Nigerien Guard Camp Kills 7, 10 Missing in Tillabéri
A surprise attack by fighters from Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) on a Nigerien National Guard camp in Bouloundjounga, Tillabéri, early yesterday, left seven personnel dead and ten missing.
The camp, located near the Samira Hill gold mine, came under assault at around 6 a.m. on August 26th, as JNIM forces surrounded and overwhelmed the guards.
The unit of 80 Security and Defense Forces (FDS) members was tasked with securing the mine, Niger’s only operational commercial gold site.
Two vehicles carrying soldiers managed to escape, but the assailants seized significant quantities of weapons and ammunition, heightening security concerns in the border area near Burkina Faso.
