China has expressed deep condolences over the passing of Kim Yong Nam, former Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced this on Tuesday in Beijing.
According to media reports, Kim Yong Nam, aged 97, died from an illness on Monday.
“Nam was an old friend of the Chinese people during his lifetime,” Mao said during a daily news briefing.
She noted that the late North Korean statesman had led several delegations to China and “made important contributions to promoting the development of the traditional friendly and cooperative relations between China and the DPRK.”
“China expresses her profound condolences over Nam’s passing and extends her sincere sympathy to his family,” Mao added.
