Ochanya Ogbanje’s Family Decries Lack of Justice 7 Years After Her Death, Claims Police Ignoring Lead on Suspect

Seven years after the tragic death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, her family says they are still struggling to get justice. During an interview on TVC, Ochanya’s elder sister expressed frustration over what she described as continual obstacles in holding those accused of abusing the late teenager accountable.

Ochanya died in 2018 from complications linked to prolonged sexual abuse. She had been sent at age five to live with her aunt, Felicia Ochiga-Ogbuja, and her husband, lecturer Andrew Ogbuja, in Benue State. While in their care, Ochanya was allegedly abused for years by Mr. Ogbuja and his son, Victor.

Although Mr. Ogbuja was acquitted in court due to what was described as “prosecutorial failure,” Victor has never faced trial. Ochanya’s sister noted that Victor has been living freely, contrary to claims by law enforcement that his whereabouts are unknown.

“He was never arrested or questioned,” she said. “We are seeing his pictures everywhere. He is in Lagos, but the police are saying they don’t know where he is. My brother has written petitions for his arrest, yet nothing has been done.”

She also revealed that her aunt, Felicia, who was sentenced to five months in prison for neglect, is still living at home with her husband.

Public outrage resurfaced earlier this year when photos and videos of Victor dancing at an event in Lagos circulated online, sparking renewed calls for authorities to act.

Ochanya’s case remains a symbol of the struggle against sexual violence and the challenges families face in pursuing justice within the Nigerian legal system.
