UK Awards 82 Nigerians Prestigious Chevening, Commonwealth Scholarships
The British Government has awarded 82 Nigerians the esteemed Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships for postgraduate studies in the UK in 2024.
A statement from Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission, confirmed on Friday that 32 scholars received the Chevening scholarships, while 50 were awarded the Commonwealth scholarships.
The pre-departure ceremony for scholars based in Abuja and surrounding areas was held in the capital, with a similar event scheduled for Lagos.
British Deputy High Commissioner, Mrs. Gill Lever, reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s educational development and emphasized the transparency and inclusivity of the selection process.
“I challenge each of you to strive for excellence, represent Nigeria well in the UK, and seize every opportunity during your scholarship. Grow your knowledge, foster cultural exchange, and bring those experiences back to Nigeria to make a positive impact,” Lever stated.
Director of Operations at British Council Nigeria, Idowu Akintade, urged the scholars to utilize their skills and knowledge for Nigeria’s development priorities, encouraging them to build strong networks and be ambassadors of the prestigious scholarships.
Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded to individuals demonstrating academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to national development. Nigeria boasts a significant alumni base, with over 4,500 scholars contributing to the country’s growth.
