A 36-year-old man from Minnesota has been charged after allegedly posing as an FBI agent in a bid to secure the release of Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to a media report.

ABC News, citing law enforcement sources, reported that the suspect, identified as Mark Anderson, was arrested at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn after he claimed to have a court order authorising the release of an inmate.

Investigators said Anderson allegedly entered the intake area of the federal detention facility and presented documents he claimed were signed by a judge. Although the criminal complaint did not name the inmate involved, sources told ABC News that Anderson was attempting to secure Mangione’s release.

Authorities said Anderson failed to present valid federal identification and instead produced a Minnesota driver’s licence. He also reportedly told officers that he was carrying weapons in his bag, which was later found to contain a barbecue fork and a pizza cutter.

Mangione is accused of fatally shooting Brian Thompson outside a hotel in Manhattan on December 4, 2024, in what prosecutors described as a targeted attack. He was arrested five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a multistate manhunt.

The case against Anderson adds another unusual twist to the high-profile murder investigation, which continues to draw national attention in the United States.
