Carney Begins Key India Visit to Reset Ties, Expand Canada’s Trade Horizons

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to begin a high-level visit to India on Friday in what analysts describe as a “significant” diplomatic mission aimed at repairing strained relations and opening new markets for Canadian exports.

The trip comes as Ottawa seeks to diversify its trade partnerships and reduce its heavy economic dependence on the United States, amid growing uncertainties in bilateral relations. With a population of more than 1.4 billion, India represents a major potential market for Canadian products, including petroleum, natural gas and agricultural commodities.

Although the visit is expected to focus strongly on diplomacy, experts caution that major economic deals may not materialise immediately. Analysts note that progress will depend on Canada’s domestic energy policies and India’s concerns over the cost and sustainability of imported resources.

“Canada still needs clarity on how far it wants to expand its oil and gas industry,” said Tarun Khanna, a professor at the University of British Columbia. “A broader improvement in relations can create incentives for both sides, but it won’t happen overnight.”

Carney’s visit also seeks to mend a diplomatic rupture that dates back to September 2023, when his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, accused India of involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist activist on Canadian soil. India strongly denied the allegation, leading to a breakdown in relations and the expulsion of diplomats by both countries.

Observers say the success of the visit will depend on whether both governments can move beyond past tensions to build trust and establish a foundation for long-term political and economic cooperation.
