Botswana Denies Hosting US Military Base, Warns Against Misinformation
The government of Botswana has dismissed claims that it hosts a United States military base, urging the public to rely on verified information in discussions about national security.
In a statement issued in Gaborone on Tuesday, government spokesperson Tuduetso Mokgosi said the Thebephatshwa Air Base is a sovereign facility fully owned and operated by the Botswana Defence Force.
“Botswana does not host a United States military base,” Mokgosi stated, stressing that the installation remains under the complete control of national authorities.
He explained that the air base plays a key role in strengthening the country’s emergency response capabilities, supporting regional peacekeeping missions, and enhancing the operational readiness of its armed forces.
Mokgosi also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, noting that unverified claims—especially those circulating across borders—could create unnecessary tension among citizens and neighbouring countries.
While acknowledging the importance of public debate in a democratic society, he emphasized that such discussions must be grounded in facts.
Botswana, he added, remains committed to maintaining strong relations with its neighbours through cooperation, dialogue, and mutual respect.
