Australia Suspends Entry of Iranian Tourists With Valid Visas for Six Months

The Australian government has announced a six-month ban on Iranian tourists holding valid visas, citing concerns they may be unable or unwilling to return home once their permits expire.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the temporary restriction, which takes effect on Thursday, is aimed at ensuring migration decisions remain under government control rather than being influenced by unfolding global events.

“Decisions about permanent stays in Australia should be deliberate decisions of the government, not a random consequence of who had booked a holiday,” Burke said.

The measure is expected to affect approximately 6,800 Iranian visa holders. However, exemptions will apply in limited cases, including partners and children of Australian citizens, with authorities also indicating that applications from parents may receive “sympathetic consideration.”

Officials said the policy was introduced in response to rapidly evolving international conditions and would allow time for a proper assessment of the situation, while retaining flexibility for exceptional cases. The decision follows earlier legislation enabling restrictions on visa holders from selected countries.

The move coincided with the government granting humanitarian visas to members of an Iranian women’s football delegation, some of whom have since returned home.

The policy has drawn criticism from refugee advocates and some lawmakers. Jana Favero described the decision as a “massive betrayal” and a “moral failure,” arguing it denies safety to people during a time of crisis in Iran.

Independent MP Zali Steggall also raised concerns, warning that cancelling valid visas could undermine confidence in Australia’s migration system and grant the government excessive powers.

Meanwhile, Greens Senator David Shoebridge criticised the policy, saying it contradicts claims that Australia’s stance on the conflict involving Iran is intended to support its people.

Authorities said the restriction applies solely to Iranian nationals and was developed in consultation with the Australian-Iranian community.
