The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media over a viral video showing a confrontation between its personnel and a motorist in Abuja, describing the incident as misrepresented.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Osondu Ohaeri, said the footage, which captured a tense exchange in the Central Business District, did not reflect the true sequence of events.

The video, widely shared online, showed FRSC officials engaging a driver who allegedly resisted arrest after being booked for traffic violations. The situation reportedly escalated when the driver diverted from the designated route to the FRSC command, drawing public attention and a gathering crowd.

However, the Corps maintained that the vehicle was lawfully stopped for offences including overloading and failure to use seatbelts, stressing that its officers followed due process in attempting to enforce compliance.

According to Ohaeri, the driver became non-compliant and ignored lawful directives, creating a scene that heightened tension in the area.

“As the situation evolved, a crowd gathered, raising security concerns and the potential for disorder,” he said.

He also dismissed allegations that FRSC personnel assaulted or threatened the driver, stating that no force was used during the encounter.

Addressing claims in the video suggesting the presence of a weapon, Ohaeri clarified that the individual seen holding an iron rod was neither connected to the Corps nor the driver, but a passerby.

He noted that FRSC officials demonstrated professionalism and restraint throughout the incident, adding that their decision to disengage was in line with global best practices for managing volatile situations.

“The action should not be interpreted as weakness, but a strategic approach to prevent escalation, protect lives and maintain public order,” he said.

The Corps reiterated its commitment to enforcing traffic laws while upholding discipline, professionalism and respect for human rights. It also urged members of the public to disregard misleading narratives and cooperate with law enforcement officers in the discharge of their duties.

The incident highlights growing concerns over the role of social media in shaping public perception of enforcement actions, often before full facts are established.
