Donald Trump was evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after gunfire erupted near the venue, triggering a major security response and the arrest of an armed suspect.

The incident occurred outside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, where hundreds of journalists, public officials and guests had gathered for the annual event. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials were safely escorted from the scene.

Among those present were Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who were also moved to safety as security personnel secured the area.

According to Trump, the suspect—armed with multiple weapons—attempted to breach a security checkpoint before being confronted by agents of the United States Secret Service. During the exchange, one officer was shot but protected by a bulletproof vest and is reported to be recovering.

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody alive, contrary to early reports. Law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have launched an investigation into the suspect’s background, motive and movements prior to the attack.

The suspect has been identified by multiple U.S. media outlets as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from California. Prosecutors say he is expected to face charges including use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on federal officers.

Speaking after the incident, Trump condemned the attack and called for national unity, urging Americans to resolve political differences peacefully. He described the assailant as a threat not only to those present but to the country’s democratic institutions.

Witnesses reported hearing between five and eight gunshots, followed by panic and a swift lockdown of the hotel as security teams evacuated guests and sealed entrances.

Officials say investigations are ongoing, and have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
