Man in court for allegedly stealing items worth N2.6m

A 39-year-old man, Adebowale Yusuf, on Friday appeared before an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing items worth N2.6 million.

Adebowale, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp Simon Njue, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with others still at large in April at the Akowonjo area of Lagos.

Njue alleged that the defendant stole a photo camera valued at N1.5 million belonging to Mr Makinde Wilson.

He also alleged that the defendant stole a laptop and phone valued at N650,000 belonging to Mr Achibong David, and another laptop valued at N500,000 belonging to Mrs Adewole Adeshola.

According to him, the total value of the stolen items was N2.65 million.

He said the defendant was apprehended by passersby and handed over to the police.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 411 stipulates two years imprisonment for conspiracy.

Magistrate F.R. Ogunkoyode granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until June 5 for mention.
