Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have confirmed a new outbreak of Ebola virus disease, with 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths reported so far, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said on Friday.

According to Africa CDC, the outbreak is concentrated mainly in Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, both in eastern DRC. Four of the deaths have been confirmed among laboratory-verified Ebola cases.

The agency also reported suspected infections in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province.

Africa CDC warned that the risk of further spread remains high due to ongoing population movement, insecurity in affected areas, and gaps in contact tracing. It also noted that the outbreak zones are close to Uganda and South Sudan, raising concerns about possible cross-border transmission.

“We are working with DRC, Uganda, South Sudan and partners to strengthen surveillance, preparedness and response, and to help contain the outbreak as quickly as possible,” said Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC.

The health body urged residents in affected communities to follow public health guidance, report symptoms early, avoid contact with suspected cases, and cooperate with response teams.

An emergency high-level coordination meeting is expected to hold on Friday, bringing together health officials from the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan, along with partners including the World Health Organization (WHO).

Ebola virus disease is a severe and often fatal illness transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, contaminated materials, or deceased victims of the disease.

The DRC had only last year declared an end to a previous Ebola outbreak in Kasai Province.
