Horror in Jos: Pregnant Woman Fatally Struck by Reckless Driver Fleeing VIO Checkpoint
A heavily pregnant woman, identified as Ruth Nen Maurice, has died after she was struck by a reckless driver who was allegedly attempting to escape officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) in Jos.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in the city centre of Plateau State.
Eyewitnesses said the driver was trying to evade a VIO checkpoint when he lost control of the vehicle and hit the woman, who was standing by the roadside at the time, waiting for transportation to a hospital for an antenatal appointment.
The suspect was reportedly engaging in a dangerous manoeuvre while fleeing enforcement officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office when the fatal crash occurred.
A close friend of the deceased, Ewan Boss Julz Odumu, confirmed the incident on social media, revealing that Ruth was carrying twins and was close to her expected delivery date before the tragedy.
“A mother who was preparing to welcome twins back home never made it alive. Her unborn babies never got the chance to cry, breathe, or see this world because of somebody’s reckless decision,” he wrote.
The spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident and stated that the driver has been arrested. He added that investigations are ongoing and the suspect will be charged to court upon completion of the inquiry.
