Deadly Floods Wreak Havoc in Central Europe
Central and Eastern Europe are battling severe flooding after torrential rains from Storm Boris caused widespread devastation. The storm has claimed four lives in Romania and forced thousands of residents to evacuate across the region.
Romania’s southeastern region of Galati has been hit hardest, with 700 homes flooded and four fatalities confirmed. “This is a catastrophe of epic proportions,” said Emil Dragomir, mayor of Slobozia Conachi, one of the worst-affected villages.
In the Czech Republic, authorities evacuated towns in the north, and over 51,000 households have been left without power, according to energy company CEZ. In response, flood barriers have been erected in Prague to protect the capital from rising water levels.
Poland has also been affected, with residents evacuated from Glucholazy, a town near the Czech border, after a river burst its banks. Firefighters are working tirelessly, building sandbag barriers in both Glucholazy and Krakow, where residents are bracing for further flooding.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis attributed the disaster to climate change, noting its increasing impact on Europe. “We are again facing the effects of climate change, with dramatic consequences,” he stated.
The extreme rainfall and flooding are part of a growing trend of climate-related disasters across the continent, as a warming atmosphere leads to more frequent and intense storms.
