Starmer Resigns as Labour Leader, Triggers Race to Choose Britain’s Next Prime Minister

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced he will step down as leader of the Labour Party, setting in motion a leadership contest that will determine the United Kingdom’s next prime minister.

Speaking outside Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said he had accepted that he was no longer best placed to lead Labour into the next general election and had informed King Charles of his decision.

Although stepping aside as party leader, Starmer confirmed he would remain prime minister until Labour completes its leadership process to ensure what he described as an orderly transition.

Labour’s governing body is expected to open nominations for the leadership race on July 9, with the process scheduled to conclude before Parliament returns in September.

Starmer pledged full support for his eventual successor, saying they would inherit “a Britain that is far stronger and fairer” than the one his administration took over.

Attention has quickly shifted to Andy Burnham, who is widely regarded as the frontrunner after securing a commanding victory in the recent Makerfield by-election. Burnham confirmed his intention to enter the race and received an early endorsement from former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who had previously been considered a potential contender.

Addressing reporters upon arriving in London, Burnham praised Starmer’s leadership and service but declined to discuss whether he would seek a fresh general election if he becomes prime minister.

Starmer, who became Labour leader in April 2020 and led the party to a landslide general election victory in July 2024, will leave office as the shortest-serving Labour prime minister in modern history.

During an emotional resignation speech attended by supporters, colleagues and staff, Starmer reflected on his family and future outside office.

“When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job — being the best husband and father I can be,” he said.

The announcement follows growing pressure within Labour after disappointing election performances across England, Wales and Scotland, alongside criticism over recent policy reversals and internal party tensions.

Senior Labour figures, including Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, paid tribute to Starmer’s record in government and his contribution to reshaping the party.

Opposition leaders reacted swiftly, with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticising Labour’s direction under Starmer, while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called for an immediate general election.

The Labour leadership contest is now expected to dominate British politics over the coming weeks as the party prepares to choose both a new leader and the country’s next prime minister.
