Five people have been killed following a shooting incident at a youth welfare facility in Stade, northern Germany, with police confirming the arrest of two suspects, including the alleged gunman.

The shooting occurred on Monday at a facility located on Dankersstrasse, south of Stade’s town centre. Authorities said the centre provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women and young mothers with children.

Police confirmed that several other people sustained injuries in the attack, although the exact number of casualties has not yet been disclosed.

Security officials moved quickly to secure the area and assured residents that there was no ongoing threat to public safety. Video footage from the scene showed a heavy police presence, emergency responders, and ambulances stationed along the residential street.

According to investigators, two individuals were taken into custody, with one believed to have opened fire. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to determine the motive and reconstruct the events leading to the shooting.

A resident living opposite the facility, identified as Vitali Mertens, said he heard multiple gunshots before security personnel sealed off the area.

“The whole area was cordoned off right away,” he said, adding that police directed residents away from the scene.

Germany maintains relatively strict gun control laws compared to the United States, and mass shootings remain uncommon, although the country has witnessed several high-profile incidents in recent years.

Stade, a town of about 50,000 residents, is located roughly 40 kilometres from Hamburg.

The latest incident follows previous deadly attacks, including a 2023 shooting in Hamburg that left six people dead at a Jehovah’s Witness worship centre and a 2016 mass shooting in Munich in which nine people were killed.

Investigations remain ongoing.
