Meta Bans Russian State Media Over Alleged Foreign Interference

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has announced a global ban on Russian state media outlets, including Rossiya Segodnya and RT, accusing them of engaging in foreign interference. This move, which comes amid growing efforts to combat Moscow’s propaganda, has sparked outrage from the Kremlin.

The ban, rolled out over the next few days, is part of Meta’s broader strategy to counter Russia’s covert influence operations. The company’s statement indicated that its decision followed “careful consideration” and targeted media outlets involved in amplifying Russian propaganda.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned Meta’s decision, calling it a “selective action against Russian media” and warning that it could damage future relations between Russia and Meta.

RT, previously known as Russia Today, dismissed the ban in a statement, while Rossiya Segodnya, the parent company of RIA Novosti and Sputnik, declined to comment.

Meta’s actions follow new sanctions imposed by the U.S. on RT, accusing the outlet of supporting Russian military efforts in Ukraine and spreading disinformation globally.
