US Vice President JD Vance has criticised what he described as foreign influence on American policymaking, alleging that a well-funded campaign is working to undermine US diplomatic efforts with Iran.

Speaking during an interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Vance said foreign governments routinely seek to influence US policy but argued that the greater concern is when American political leaders allow such efforts to shape national decisions.

He claimed there is a “secret” and “well-funded” campaign aimed at preventing a diplomatic agreement between Washington and Tehran, adding that some officials within the Israeli government oppose negotiations with Iran.

Vance also commented on the investigation into late financier Jeffrey Epstein, saying he had not seen credible evidence linking President Donald Trump to criminal wrongdoing. However, he argued that the investigation was mishandled by US authorities.

He further alleged that Epstein had significant connections to Israel’s centre-left political establishment, though he did not provide evidence to support the claim.

The vice president said Israel remains an important US ally but stressed that Washington should pursue policies based on its own national interests, particularly on regional security and energy concerns in the Gulf.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later said President Trump agreed that foreign governments attempt to influence American public opinion, describing such efforts as a reality in international politics.

Vance’s remarks come amid ongoing debate in Washington over US policy toward Israel and Iran, with some lawmakers calling for changes to American military assistance and diplomatic engagement in the Middle East.

The comments have drawn attention as they reflect a more critical tone toward Israeli influence than is typically expressed by senior US officials.

However, several of Vance’s assertions, including claims about covert campaigns and Epstein’s alleged political connections, have not been independently substantiated.
